👋🏽 Welcome to Barcelona

Barcelona is Spain's second-largest city, with roughly 1.6 million people. It's the capital of Catalonia, sitting on the northeastern Mediterranean coast with the ninth-largest port in Europe.

Beyond the architectural masterpieces of Gaudí and Domènech i Montaner (several of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites), you'll find a city that balances rich cultural heritage with a vibrant international community. There are hiking trails in the surrounding mountains, hidden coastal towns along the Costa Brava, and beaches right in the city itself.

Two official languages coexist here: Spanish and Catalan. About 30% of locals speak Catalan daily, and you'll encounter it on street signs, in university settings, and throughout public life. Barcelona also has a large and growing international community, with students and expats from all over the world.

⛱️ Climate

Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate with about 310 sunny days and only 55 rainy days per year. Compared to inland Spain, the sea breeze keeps temperatures mild.

Summer (Jun–Sep)

July and August average 29°C by day, 22–23°C at night. June and September sit around 26°C / 20°C. Temperatures above 34°C are rare.

Autumn (Aug–Nov)

It rarely rains, but when it does, be prepared. Autumn brings "gota fría" episodes of heavy rainfall. The city's infrastructure doesn't handle flooding well.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Average 17°C by day, 8°C at night. Humidity and sea breeze can make it feel colder. Apartments often lack heating, so plan accordingly!
